Killcare ia a quiet beach side suburb 2 hours north of Sydney on Australia's East coast.

The existing residence was built in the 1960/70's as a holiday home and was a typical example of the elevated budget weekenders that were built up and down the coast at that time. The original ground floor plan comprised a brick base containing an entry and laundry with open spaces between brick "book ends". Over time these open spaces had been filled in to provide a garage and rumpus room.

The timber framed upper floor contained 3 bedrooms, a bathroom, a kitchen/meals-room and living room. A typically narrow deck had been provided to the street side with a slightly wider deck to the rear view side. The upper floor was finished with timber cladding and a flat metal roof.

The site is located a few streets back from the Killcare escarpment and overlooks Bouddi National Park and Putty Beach and enjoys breathtaking expansive views to the south across Broken Bay toward Pittwater.

The inherent design difficulties, typical of sites in this area, result from the obvious need to embrace the dominant southern view while acquiring the light and warmth from northern sunlight on the street facade.

  • Maximise the ocean views to the south while capturing as much northern light as possible with sacrificing privacy from the street.
  • Design should be contemporary with a metal roof, light and airy with good ventilation.
  • Large outdoor areas connected to living areas at ground level and upper floor level with opportunities to shelter from the southerly winds and enjoy winter sunlight from the north.
  • Open plan living areas that provide a "beach house" environment.
  • Provide a light and airy mezzanine style master bedroom suite with views over the ocean to the south.
  • Provide a double garage to the street side and a pool to the rear yard (view side)

The home now consists of 4 bedrooms, a study, 2 living spaces, a dining area, kitchen, entry, 3 bathrooms, laundry, 2 large decks and a double garage.
