Instructions & Notes

In Australia architects must be registered with their local state authority. This requires, at a minimum, certain qualifications and ongoing professional development commitments. State registration fees are not trivial. For this reason, and many others, many professionals with architecture degrees from reputable universities choose not to register.

Final note: Unregistered architects can not legally call themselves architects in Australia. (Note: the laws governing this are legislated at the state level.) Thus they often call themselves "building designers" or "interior designers", depending on their specialties. However many highly experienced drafts people also call themselves "building designers". Thus it is best to ask for qualifications and to review portfolios.
