Plant description

Agave edwardii, the octopus agave, is also known as Agave vilmoriniana. A very easy care, low maintenance succulent with long arching blue-green leaves. This is a great landscaping plant, with a very sculptural look. Grows to around 1.2 metres high and wide. Great potted plants, garden specimens and for massed plantings.

Agaves are excellent waterwise plants, and are very drought hardy. Will grow in full sun as well as partial shade. Frost tolerant. Mulch with pebbles rather than regular mulch. Plant in a free draining soil, as boggy conditions can cause rot and the death of the plant.

Propagation is from small side plants called pups. Once large enough to handle, they can be pulled off from the main plant and potted up.

The octopus agave has soft spines and no teeth along the leaf margins, so is more gardener friendly than other spikier agaves.
