Plant description

Camellia sasanqua 'Paradise Simone' is a compact hardy evergreen shrub with single mid pink flowers with crepey petals, borne from autumn through to winter. The flowers have a centre of bright yellow stamens. It is a slow growing miniature variety to around 1.5 metres high and a metre wide, with small glossy green leaves. It is particularly suited for low hedges, or as a specimen plant. It is also good for topiary and bonsai work. It can be grown in a large container. It can be kept to a lower height with regular pruning.

Sasanqua camellias can be grown in a sunny spot as well as being well suited to partial shade. They like a slightly acid, moist soil. Water regularly until established. They will handle periods of drought once established. They can be left to grow naturally, or clipped to shape. Fertilise in spring with a camellia and azalea fertilser or general purpose fertiliser. A good layer of mulch around the plant will help to keep the root zone cool, deter weed growth, and conserve soil moisture. They have few pests or disease problems.
