Plant description
Guzmania conferta, the cone-headed Guzmania, is a hardy epiphytic bromeliad, with large, showy red-orange and yellow flowers in summer. The plant dies after flowering, but will grow from new offsets. The folaige is glossy green, and grows in a rosette shape. Likes warmth and humidity.
Guzmania likes a warm climate, and a part shaded position. The dappled light under trees is an ideal position. Full sun may burn the leaves. Grow in a well drained soil or in orchid compost. They can be tied to bark with some sphagnum moss in between. Water into the central cup of the plant, and keep topped up. Guzmania don't like boggy soil, which may encourage rotting.
Propagation is from offshoots, which can be removed and planted.
