Plant description

Hedychium gardnerianum, or ginger lily, is an erect clumping herbaceous perennial plant. It can form large clumps that grow from rhizomes, and has broad leaves that give a tropical feel to the garden, as well as fragrant large spires of flowers. The flowers come in various colours, from yellow to apricots and reds, and are fragrant. This plant is different to edible ginger, and is purely ornamental. It grows best in warmer areas, but can take some frost. Colder temperatures can make the plant go dormant, but it will reshoot from the underground rhizomes when the weather warms. They can be grown as container plants, in large containers.

Hedychiums like a fertile soil, and prefer partial shade. They can grow in full sun, but the leaves can burn if the sun is too strong. They also like regular watering, but can take dry periods once established. They are troubled by few pests and diseases.

Propagation is by division.

This species can become an environmental weed in warmer areas, so care should be taken.
