Plant description
Hibiscus rosa-sinensis 'Catavkil' is an evergreen shrub to around 2 metres tall and wide, with large single claret red flowers. The foliage is deep green, contrasting nicely with the flowers. It blooms continuously through the warm months, and the flowers can reach 20 cms in diameter. Use as a feature plant, for massed plantings, and is great for container growing. Likes warm, frost free areas, from temperate to tropical climates.
Hibiscus like a sunny position, and fertile, well drained soil. Fertilise in spring and autumn, and water regularly. Hibiscus don't like to grow in boggy conditions. Prune lightly to keep the plant growth dense.
The fibres of hibiscus bark can be used to make grass skirts.
