Plant description

Hydrangea macrophylla 'Storm Cloud' is a mop top variety of hydrangea with large flower heads in blue or mauve, with stunning black contrasting stems. Hydrangea macrophylla is a tough and adaptable deciduous shrub that is frost tolerant, but can also take high temperatures. It is easy to grow with minimal maintenance, and will bring colour to shady areas of the garden. The flowers make good cut flowers, and can also be dried. Once established, the plant is reasonably dry tolerant, if given occasional deep watering. Feed in early spring with a slow release fertiliser. If pruning is required, cut back in winter, just above the plump buds. It is troubles by few pests or diseases.

The colour of most hydrangeas can be changed by the soil pH. Grow in acid soil and fertilise with aluminium sulphate for blue flowers. For pink flowers, grow in alkaline soil and add lime as needed.
