Plant description

Hymenocallis littoralis, spider lily, is a large and eye catching ornamental bulbous perennial with large white flowers from summer to autumn. The flowers are vanilla scented and make good cut flowers which last well in a vase. They are easy to grow and can be left in the ground, where the clump will multiply. It can be lifted and divided when the clump gets too crowded. Grow in full sun to part shade, and they prefer a dry dormant period in autumn for best flowering in summer. Can take light frost. Snails and slugs like to chomp on the foliage, so sprinkle a few snail pellets around if you have these pests.
