Plant description

Koelreuteria paniculata, the golden rain tree, is a spreading, umbrella shaped decidous tree with pannicles of golden yellow small flowers. It grows from 7 to 10 metres tall. It provides interest through all seasons. The new foliage growth is pinkish red, maturing to glossy green decorative pinnate leaves. It flowers generously through summer, and the falling flowers lead to the name of golden rain tree. The flowers develop into pink-red seed capsules which are also decorative. In autumn the foliage turns bronze gold. The trunk is shiny brown with finely fissured attractive bark.

This tree likes a sunny spot, and can grow well on a wide range of soil types. It is drought tolerant once established. It tolerates frost and salt.

Propagation is by seed. Plant in spring.

This plant has the potential to become a weed problem in some areas, as it self seeds readily.
