Plant description

French lavender is a perennial shrub with grey leaves and delightfully perfumed flowers. They are low maintenance plants, and make an lovely garden plant, container plant or for low hedges.

Lavender are drought tolerant, with few pests and diseases. They prefer full sun and soil with excellent drainage, as waterlogging can cause root rot. A light prune helps to maintain a good shape. Lavender dislike high humidity, so in humid climates, maintain good air circulation.

Native to the Mediterranean, lavender has been widely grown throughout the world. Used in ancient Egypt for its fragrance, it was also favoured in Greece and Rome. Lavender oil has many useful properties. It is antiseptic, calming and eases headaches. It can be used to deter headlice and other insects.
