Plant description

Lilium lancifolium is one of the bulbous lilies known as the tiger lily. It has large showy trumpet shaped orange flowers, spotted black, in summer. It is a tough and hardy plant. It can tolerate periods of dryness, but regular watering will improve the flowering. It prefers a well drained soil in a sunny position, but will also do well in dappled sun and shade. Mulch well to keep the soil moist and cool, and to deter weed growth.

This variety of lilium produces small black bulbils on the upper leaves, where the leaf joins the stem. These can be removed and planted when mature. It can also be propagated from seed.

This plant has the potential to become weedy in colder areas. Removing bulbils and seed pods will help to reduce unwanted plants.
