Plant description

Magnolia x soulangeana is a large muti-stemmed shrub to small deciduous tree, with large tulip shaped flowers in spring. The beautiful flowers appear before the leaves on the attractive bare branches. The plant is vase shaped while young, and develops a spreading umbrella shape as it matures. Growth rate is slow to moderate. It is an excellent small tree for the home garden and larger parks, to provide summer shade and winter sun, and a stunning floral display. It is frost tolerant.

Many magnolias grow best in alkaline soil and with shelter, but Magnolia x soulangeana grows on a wider soil range and in more open positions. It is a shallow rooted plant, and dislikes root disturbance. It prefers a humus rich soil and regular mulching to protect the roots and discourage weed growth. It likes regular watering.

Magnolia x soulangeana is a cross between Magnolia liliiflora and Magnolia denudata. The cross was first made in the early 1800's, and plant breeders have since created many fine cultivars.
