Plant description

apple1

The apple is a small to medium sized deciduous tree, originating from Asia to Europe, though now widely cultivated throughout the world for the fruit. There are more than 7,500 different apple cultivars. There are some good varieties that will produce in warmer climates, though most cultivars need a certain amount of chilling hours for best production. There are  dwarf varieties of apple for small spaces, columnar shaped ones for narrow spaces, and apples also can be espaliered against a fence to take up less room. Apples need to have a pollinator of a different variety, so at least two trees need to be planted that will flower at similar times.

Apples like a well drained friable soil, with regular watering and fertilising. They are prone to a few bacterial and fungal diseases, such as apple scab and mildew.
