This aromatic herb has rather spectacular pink or red terminal flower heads and interesting foliage. It dies down to nothing during winter but then grows vigorously through the warmer months from the underground rootstock. It is reputed to have antiseptic properties and is sometimes used to prepare a medicinal tea, however, this is an activity that is done entirely at the reader's risk. It is a plant well worth growing for its ornamental value though and will thrive and naturalise in a moist well drained spot with at least a few hours sun each day.
