Plant description

Nandina is an easy care, evergreen small dense shrub, used for the brightly coloured  foliage in spring and winter, and its resemblance to bamboo. Despite the common name, nandina is not a bamboo, so it is not invasive. The foliage can be used in flower arrangements.

Nandina is trouble free in the garden. Give it regular water to establish it in the first year, and a slow release fertiliser. It can be clipped to a formal hedge, or left natural as an informal hedge. Drought tolerant, frost resistant and can be used for coastal gardens, nandina can also be used in containers. 

Nandina is a native of Asia, and was often planted in temple grounds to symbolise good fortune. This led to the name of heavenly bamboo. It was brought to the West in 1804.
