Plant description

petunia 1

petunia 2

petunia 3

Petunias are deservedly popular for the home gardener. They have a low spreading growth habit, are generous in their flowering, and are generally trouble free plants in a good range of flower colours. They are equally good for garden beds and pots, also their cascading habit makes a spectacular display in hanging gardens. Petunias are in the nightshade family and are related to tobacco, tomatoes and potatoes.

Modern petunias tend to be naturally compact in habit with downy rounded leaves and trumpet shaped flowers. The flowers can be single or double. They come in colours from white, red, and pinks, to blue and purples, and even black, and can also be attractively bicoloured or veined. The leaf hairs can be sticky. You can sometimes see small insects stuck to the leaf hairs.

Petunias like a sunny spot, but can grow in partial shade. They will grow well with a minimum of pruning. A general fertiliser from time to time will ensure good growth. Flowers are easily damaged by water, so underneath watering is best. Dead head flowers to keep them flowering at their best, especially after rain. Aphids can be a problem, but can be deterred with soapy water.

Petunias originate from South America. Discovered by the explorer James Tweedie, they were first sent to Paris in 1823. They have been extensively hybridised since then. Breeders are working at improving their weather resistance.
