Plant description

Philodendron erubescens, the Blushing Philodendron, is a perennial climbing or trailing plant valued for the decorative foliage and as a hardy indoor plant. It has shiny dark green leaves, which are coppery coloured underneath, and the new growth is also copper coloured. They originate from tropical South America.

Philodendrons tolerate neglect and low light levels, but will thrive if given good treatment. The best conditions are warmth, indirect or filtered light, humidity, moist soil and regular fertilising with half strength liquid fertiliser. In mild, frost free areas they can be grown as garden plants, in cooler areas they can be grown as potted specimens either indoors, or outside under trees, and brought indoors when the weather cools down. Watering should be decreased in the colder months.

Propagation is by stem cuttings, or sometimes by division of offsets.

Philodendrons are generally trouble free plants with few pests and diseases. Over or under-watering can lead to root rot or yellowing leaves. Leaf browning can be from over fertilising, causing leaf burn. Leaf burn can also occur from too much direct sun.

Note that all parts of the plant are poisonous.
