Plant description

Photinia 'Red Robin' is a hardy evergreen shrub that makes a superb hedging plant. The new foliage growth is a deep red, and it responds well to pruning, forming a dense habit. It can also be left unpruned as a screen or wind break planting. It is tolerant of a wide range of growing conditions, but will do best in a sunny position in a well drained, moist soil. The plant flowers in spring with pannicles of small white to cream flowers.

For best growth, prepare the planting spot by digging over the soil well and removing any weeds. Once planted, water regularly until the plants establish, also fertilising through the warmer months. Mulching will help to slow water loss, will build organic matter, and will help supress weed growth. Competition from other plants can slow growth. If growing as a hedge, tip prune regularly when new growth starts to keep the plants dense. If allowed to grow too tall before pruning, the plant can develop gaps at the base. A high phosphorous fertiliser when young will encourage good root formation.

Propagation is from tip or semi hardwood cuttings. Rooting hormone will increase the chances of success.
