Plant description

Frangipanis are small deciduous trees with gorgeously perfumed flowers. The beautiful flowers come in a range of colours, and look lovely floated in a bowl. They are most strongly fragrant at night. Related to the oleander, they both have an irritating milky sap. There are two species that retain their leaves and flowers in winter, P. pudica and P. obtusa. Frangipanis are a good choice to grow against a house or pool as the roots are non-invasive, which also makes them a good choice for container growing. They are drought resistant, but don't tolerate frost.

Frangipanis are relatively pest free. They can be affected by frangipani rust, and root, branch and tip rot, but this can be controlled by not watering in winter, picking up and burning affected leaves and branches, and a fungicide spray if necessary.

Frangipani are native to southern Mexico and Panama, but have been spread to most tropical and subtropical areas of the world because of their beauty and perfume. They are used for making leis, and are also used for indicating relationship status, worn on the left if taken, on the right if free.
