Plant description
Portulacaria afra 'Variegata', the jade plant, is a bushy succulent shrub with shining brown stems that age to grey, and round, glossy green and yellow variegated leaves. It is a very hardy and adaptable plant, and is a very popular container plant. It can be grown as a bonsia plant. It likes a sunny spot, and is also happy with lower light levels. It can be grown as an indoor plant in a bright spot. It is a frost tender plant. In colder areas it can be moved to a sheltered spot in winter if it is container grown. When grown in a warm climate, it can become quite large, reaching around 2-3 metres tall and wide. It is rarely troubled by pests or diseases. Root rot can occur in very wet conditions.
Propagation is by cuttings, which will root readily even without rooting hormone.
