Plant description

Prunus cerasifera 'Nigra' is a deciduous shrub to small tree, with eye catching dark purple-black leaves. It grows to around 6 metres tall unpruned, but can be kept smaller with regular pruning. It has a moderate growth rate, and is upright, becoming rounded with age. It has abundant white to pink flowers in late winter to spring. The bark is attractive, black brown when mature and dark red twigs. It is frost tolerant, and moderately drought tolerant once established. The dark foliage makes a lovely contrast to other garden plantings. It is a useful street tree.

Prunus nigra tolerates a wide range of soils. Best growth is on well drained moist soil in a sunny position. Mulch well to deter weed growth and to conserve soil moisture. Feed in spring.
