Plant description

The almond is a deciduous tree that is valued for the edible, nutritious nuts borne in autumn. Closely related to peaches, they prefer a Mediterranean climate, but can be grown in a wide range of climates. They have a low chill requirement, are frost hardy, but late frosts can kill the flowers.

Almonds like a rich, well drained soil. They are drought hardy once established, but crop size will be lessened. Almond trees can be pruned to size, and can be grown in large containers provided they are well fed and watered.

Almonds should have other varieties planted nearby to cross pollinate. They should not be planted near to peaches, as they can hybridise and the resulting nuts will then be bitter.
