Plant description

The pomegranate is a perennial deciduous large shrub to small tree, to 7 metres tall. They are very ornamental, and are tough and hardy. They are frost and drought tolerant. They bear lovely red or orange blooms in late spring to early summer, followed by red, orange or yellow edible fruit. New growth is a coppery colour, and leaves yellow in autumn.

There are dwarf ornamental varieties, as well as ones grown for their fruit. If growing for fruit, it is best to grow one of the specially selected and named varieties. The fruit has a thin, leathery rind which contains a bitter pith and seeds surrounded by translucent red pulp. The fruit is susceptible to fruit fly. The fruit needs to be picked when ripe, as they don't ripen further once picked.

Pomegranates are best suited to hot dry summer areas, and grow in most soils. They prefer a well drained, alkaline soil. They need a sunny position, and they respond well to pruning.

Pomegranate fruit is a source of vitamin C, potassium and polyphenols.
