Plant description

Rosemary is a useful herb which also makes a tough and versatile garden plant. In Australia it signifies rememberance, a sprig for Anzac Day or funerals is traditional. It can be clipped to a formal look, grown informally, or as a hedge, and there are lovely prostrate forms that can spill over walls or pots.

Rosemary is an aromatic, evergreen shrub with needle like leaves. It is reasonably compact, but occasional pruning will improve the shape. It flowers in spring with a profusion of small blue flowers,  there are pink or white versions too. Medicinally, rosemary is antiseptic and antioxidant. For cooking, rosemary is one of the most useful herbs.

Relatively pest free, there is usually little need for sprays. Being of Mediterranean origin, it is drought tolerant, but doesn't like being waterlogged.

The name is from the latin ros marinus, which means dew of the sea. It was said that the Virgin Mary spread her cloak over a white rosemary, which turned the flowers blue.
