Plant description

rubus fruticosus blackberry

Blackberry thornless 'Chester' is a vigorous growing perennial scrambling or low climbing plant. It is a selection of the common blackberry that was made in America. It may have very fine prickles, but not the sharp thorns of the common blackberry. It is very suitable for growing in the home garden, and will bear good crops of rich dark fruit when well cared for. Blackberries are best trained on a fence or trellis. Thornless blackberries suffer from few pests and diseases.

Blackberries like regular fertilising through the growing season, and regular watering to produce well. They prefer well drained, slightly acid soil, in a semi-shaded, protected position. They need a period of cold weather to set fruit.

Blackberries begin to produce in the second season of growth, and bear on one year old canes. The fruit is harvested when it has developed a rich black colour. Under ripe fruit will be somewhat tart.

Yearly maintenance pruning to remove old canes will keep the plant healthy and productive. Pruning will also keep the vigorous growth in check.
