Plant description

schinus molle peppercorn tree

schinus molle peppercorn tree.

Schinus molle is a fast growing, large evergreen tree, with pendulous, ferny foliage and fissured grey bark. It grows to around 15 metres tall. It bears long panicles of insignificant white flowers, followed by pink to purplish berries. The leaves and berries are aromatic when crushed. It is rarely troubled by pests or diseases.

This plant has been widely planted in farmyards and homesteads in dry areas, as it is a useful drought tolerant shade tree. It has become a weed problem, and it has escaped to invade grasslands and forests, as it seeds readily. It also has a vigorous root system, so should not be planted too near drains, houses or pipework.

Propagation is from seed, suckers and cuttings.

The fruit may be poisonous to pigs and poultry. It has antiseptic and antibacterial properties.
