Plant description

Spathodea campanulata, the African Tulip Tree, is a large fast growing evergreen tree which can reach 24 metres tall. It has glossy large oval leaves, and bears large orange-red flowers in spring, summer and autumn. It is a popular ornamental tree in subtropical and tropical areas. In cooler climates it may be semi deciduous. The flowers are nectar rich and bird and butterfly attracting.

Propagation is from seed.

The African tulip tree is a declared pest plant in Queensland. It spreads by suckers and by seed, which can be wind blown, and grow prolifically. It also has a large root system, which can be a problem close to houses and drains.

The fruit of this tree is poisonous.
