Plant description

Stanhopea nigroviolacea, the Upside down orchid, is an epiphytic orchid, native to cooler areas of South America. It can be grown in temperate climates as well as subtropical and tropical. The flowers are strongly perfumed with a vanilla fragrance, and emerge from the base of the plant in spring to autumn. The flowers are best viewed in a hanging basket.

Stanhopea needs an open, well drained mix. It likes a part shaded position. Water regularly through the warm months, less in winter. Fertilise in spring and summer with an orchid fertiliser.

Propagation is by division of the plant.
