Plant description

Stevia is a perennial herb in warm climates, and an annual in colder areas. It is grown for the sweet tasting leaves that can be used as a sugar substitute. Stevia has zero calories and carbohydrates. Fresh leaves are sweet but with a slight earthy, liquorice aftertaste. This aftertaste is lost after drying the leaves. The leaves can be used fresh or dried.

Stevia likes a frost free position, with moist soil with good drainage, enriched with compost. Mulch to protect the surface feeder roots and to keep them moist. It likes a sunny or semi-shaded position. Grows well in containers. It dies down in winter, reappearing in spring. If growing in tropical areas, or in hot weather, grow in shade.

Propagation is by seed or tip cuttings.

Stevia is native to Brazil.
