Plant description

Tagetes patula, the French marigold, is a colourful annual bedding plant that flowers prolifically from spring to autumn. It is widely used for massed planting in garden beds and for potted colour. It is an easy care, reliable plant. It is rarely troubled by pests or diseases, unless they are grown in a shady spot. The pom pom shaped flowers come in bright shades of yellow, gold, orange and cream. The French marigold is a compact small plant. Good for attracting butterflies and moths.

Propagate from seed. They are quick to flower from planting the seed, appearing a few weeks afetr sowing. This makes them great for kids to plant, as the seed is also large and easy to handle.

Marigolds are good for planting to deter root nematodes. They should not be planted near legume crops, as they will affect their growth.

French marigold flowers are rich in lutein, and can be used as a healthy garnish.
