Plant description

Thuja occidentalis 'Smaragd' is a popular, hardy, low maintenance conifer with a compact pyramid shape and bright emerald green foliage. It is slow growing, reaching 2 metres in ten years. It suits full sun to part shaded positions. If too shady, the foliage can become sparse. It does best in moist, well drained soils, but is tolerant of a wide range of soil types. It is frost hardy. Once established, it is reasonably tolerant of drier conditions, but will benefit from deep soaking in hot or dry times. It makes a good screen plant, specimen plant, hedging plant and is well suited to container growing. It makes an excellent potted Christmas tree.
