Plant description

Ulmus parvifolia, the Chinese elm, is a medium sized deciduous tree. It is a very adaptable and hardy tree that grows to around ten metres high and wide. It has dark green leaves that turn yellow in autumn, and then drop. The bark is a feature, as it is beautifully mottled. It is a good tree for large gardens, parks and for street plantings. It will tolerate most soil types, but prefers moist and well drained conditions. It is a moderately fast grower.

The Chinese elm is a good bonsai subject.
