Plant description

calla lily1

Calla lilies grow from a bulb-like structure called a tuber (similar to a potato) and produce interesting glossy green leaves. The trumpet shaped flowers are produced in spring and make superb, long-lasting cut flowers, and have been bred to have a wide and beautiful range . They are a herbaceous perennial.

Optimum performance occurs in a very well drained soil accompanied by a sunny position away from the danger of heavy frost. If you do not have such conditions in your garden then consider growing call lillies in a moderately sized container. A handful of slow release fertiliser added to the soil or potting mix at planting time (which can be done from autumn to winter) will take care of the nutritional needs whilst water should be applied only when the top of the soil or potting mix has started to dry out. After flowering the leaves will die down and the tuber should be dug up and stored dry at room temperature until the following autumn.

The word calla comes from the Greek term for beautiful. It has become naturalised in some parts of Australia, particularly West Australia, and has been classified as a toxic weed and pest.
