Plant description
Albizia julibrissin, the Persian silk tree, is a hardy and adaptable small deciduous tree with pretty pom pom flowers in summer. The flowers consist of clusters of stamens, and are fragrant and butterfly, bird and bee attracting. The foliage is also attractive, with rich green feathery leaves, which will close at night and during rainy spells. In Japan, the names mean 'sleeping tree'. A good tree for small to medium gardens, it provides filtered shade. It is fast growing, and does well on a wide range of soil types. It is tolerant of light frost and soil dryness once established.
This plant seeds readily, so can become a weed problem. Removing the long pods that form after flowering will help to prevent volunteer seedlings.
