Plant description

vinca periwinkle blue flower

vinca periwinkle

Vinca, or periwinkle is a hardy perennial trailing vine which is a useful grouncover plant. It will root along the stems, which forms a dense mat, and it can spread indefinitely. It usually has blue-violet flowers, and there are white flowered forms, as well as double flowered and variegated foliage varieties. It is adaptable to most soils, and is frost hardy. It flowers best in full sun, but can also be grown in part or full shade. It flowers from mid spring to autumn.

It can become invasive unless kept under control, and has the potential to become a weed. All parts of the plant can cause stomach upset if eaten.
