Plant description

Heliotrope arborescens, cherry pie, is a low growing shrub with vanilla perfumed flowers of mauve, white or purple in summer and autumn. The foliage is textured and dark green, and there is a golden leafed variety and one with purple tinged leaves. The scent carries in the afternoon, and it is delightful if planted near paths and windows. It will grow to around a metre high and a couple of metres wide, and likes a well drained soil. It likes a sunny spot, but some protection fro hot afternoon sun is appreciated. Feed with a good general purpose fertiliser in the warm months. Trim back hard if needed to rejuvenate the plant.

Propagate from tip cuttings, which root readily.
