Plant description

Michelia yunnanensis is an attractive large evergreen shrub that has numerous delightfully perfumed white or cream flowers in spring. It will also spot flower in autumn. It has attractive green foliage, and some cultivars also have contrasting beautiful brown velvet hairs on the flower buds and leaf undersides. Even when not in flower, it forms a nice foliage shrub, and the foliage can be used in cut flower arrangements. It can be clipped to form a hedge, or left to grow naturally into a loose, open shrub. It can be container grown as well, where it can be moved to enjoy the lovely perfume. The flowers are highly attractive to harmless native bees.

It does best in an acidic, well drained moist soil. It can withstand light frosts. Fertilise to encourage good growth and flowering. It grows well in a full sun to partly shaded position, and will flower equally well in both.

Michelia yunnanensis has recently been reclassified as a magnolia. It became Magnolia dianica, but is now known as Magnolia laevifolia.
