Plant description

Mutingia calabura is a very fast growing, ornamental tropical tree that bears small red edible berries in the first year of growth. The berries are very sweet tasting, and juicy, and taste a little like caramel. The tree is very attractive, with long spreading branches and soft weeping foliage.

It grows from 7-12 metres tall, is drought tolerant and will grow well in a wide range of soil pH, from alkaline to acid. It will also thrive in poor soils, making it a good pioneer species. It can be cut back to a low height to make fruit harvest easier. It is relatively pest and disease free. It is a short lived tree, to around 10 years.

It can produce fruit year round. The fruit is nice eaten straight from the tree, and can also be made into jam. The timber from the tree is reddish brown and is long lasting, lightweight, and can be used in cabinetry.
