Plant description

Daffodils are a spring flowering, hardy perennial bulb. The original daffodil is a clear bright yellow, but thanks to the efforts of plant breeders, they now come in a range of colours and combination of colours. They die down over winter, and emerge and flower again in spring. There are miniature varieties that are lovely planted in containers. They can then be moved out of sight once flowering has finished.

Daffodils are easily grown, being relatively pest free, and are waterwise. Plant the bulbs pointed end up in autumn to flower in late winter and spring. While they will grow in semishade, they do best in a sunny position. They can rot if the soil is waterlogged for any period of time. If they are dormant in wet conditions, they can be lifted and replanted in autumn, otherwise they can be left to multiply. large clumps can be lifted and divided. Daffodils are toxic, and can be confused with onions, so be sure to store them carefully. The sap is also irritant.

Narcissus is from Greek myth. He was a handsome youth who fell in love with his own reflection, and was turned into a flower. Daffodils have been an inspiration to poets and gardeners for centuries.
