Plant description

Rollinia deliciosa is a fast growing, vigorous tree for tropical and subtropical climates. It bears edible large fruits that have creamy flesh that taste like lemon meringue. It is in the same family as custard apples. It bears fruit within 3 years of planting, and is fast growing. The large yellow fruit is bumpy and bears soft spines. Rollinia are shallow rooted, and need protection from winds. It originates from tropical America.

Rollinia prefers a rich, fertile, acid soil, and does best on a sandy loam. High humidity is needed for pollination. Regular watering and fertilising is needed while fruiting for best production.

Fruit is picked when it begins to yellow, and is slightly soft, and will further ripen off the tree. They are best eaten straight after picking as the flavour deteriorates after 24-48 hours.
