Plant description

Salvia splendens is a tender perennial bedding plant, usually grown as an annual. It flowers over a long period, from summer to autumn, in colours from red, purple to pink shades and white. In warm climates it can flower nearly all year. The flowers are tubular and are enclosed in large showy bracts. It is suited to sunny positions as well as part to deeper shade. In hot areas, plant in a semi shaded bed. Remove spent flowers to tidy the plant and to encourage more blooms. Salvia can be grown massed, spotted through other plantings, or in containers.

Salvia splendens is native to Brazil, where it grows as a taller perennial plant with bright red flowers. Plant breeders have produced many dwarf and compact cultivars, in a range of colours.

Propagation is by seed and also by cuttings.
