Plant description

Thysanolaena maxima, or Tiger grass, is a fast growing perennial grass plant that can used as a non-invasive bamboo substitute. It grows from 3-4 metres tall, on long slender canes in a tight clump, and it bears large weeping green leaves. Makes a good screening plant. Also good for growing in large containers. Tolerates light frosts.

Tiger grass does best in a sunny to part shaded spot. It is tolerant of a wide range of soil types. Water regularly until established, once established they can withstand periods of dryness. They prefer warm climates, but can be grown in cool climates.

The purple flowers are plume shaped, produced in summer, and rarely produce seed. They are used as brooms in Nepal.
