Plant description

Arthropodium cirratum 'Matapouri Bay' is a herbaceous perennial plant that forms a large attractive spray of arching leaves. The foliage has a bluish hue, and it bears masses of lily flowers through spring and summer. The flowers have soft pink buds that open out to white star shaped flowers. It is useful for brightening difficult spots under trees and in dry shade. The dense foliage acts as a groundcover, preventing weed growth under the plant.

Arthropodium is an easy care plant with few pests and diseases, and will flower in shade. It is good for coastal and poolside areas, as well as for mass plantings and container growing. It can grow in full sun to shade, and will grow in a wide range of soil types. It is suitable for tropical to temperate areas, and for cooler climates if given protection from frost. This plant is native to coastal areas of New Zealand.

The rhizomes are edible if cooked. The new rhizomes are the best, as older ones are tough and fibrous, and the taste resembles potato.
