Plant description

Helichrysum petiolare is an attractive silvery grey, shrubby perennial plant. Small white flower are produced in mid summer, but it is the felty grey foliage that is the best feature. It forms soft, dense mounds of foliage to around 60 cms high and to 1.5 metres wide, and will cascade down walls and banks. A frost tolerant, easy care, rewarding plant. The foliage is aromatic.

Helichrysum petiolare does best in a sunny position, it will also grow in a part shaded spot, but may become leggy. Prune to shape, and regular pruning will ensure the plant doesn't become sparse.

Propagation is by stem cuttings, which root easily.

Traditionally, this plant is used medicinally for coughs, colds and high blood pressure, using an infusion of the leaves. It is anti-microbial, and leaves may be applied to wounds to prevent infection.
