Plant description

The banana is a large herbaceous plant which is grown for its fruit. They grow best in tropical or subtropical climates. It is possible to grow and fruit them in temperate climates if given a warm spot with plenty of moisture and a rich soil, but they will do better in warmer climate zones.The plant forms clumps of shoots which have long decorative leaves up to 4 metres long. Mature shoots grow one large flower stalk, containing lots of hands of bananas, covered by purple-brown bracts.

Bananas need a frost free site with good drainage. Protection from strong winds is desirable. Bananas are heavy feeders, so need regular fertilising. They also need a good supply of water to produce well.

Bananas can be grown from suckers, which are the side shoots from a plant.

Bananas are an important commercial crop. They get fatal diseases, which restrict home growing in Queensland and north NSW, where a permit is needed to grow them.
