Plant description

The pomegranate, 'Wonderful', is a perennial deciduous large shrub to 4 metres tall. It is very ornamental, and is tough and hardy. 'Wonderful' is a vigorous and productive variety. It is frost and drought tolerant. It bears lovely red blooms in late spring to early summer, followed by purple-red edible fruit. New growth is a coppery colour, and leaves yellow in autumn.The fruit has a thin, leathery rind which contains a bitter pith and seeds surrounded by translucent red pulp. The fruit of 'Wonderful' is good for juicing and for eating out of hand. The fruit is susceptible to fruit fly. It should be picked when ripe, as once picked they don't further ripen.

Pomegranates are best suited to hot dry summer areas, and grow in most soils. They prefer a well drained soil. They need a sunny position, and they respond well to pruning.

Pomegranate fruit is a source of vitamin C, potassium and polyphenols.
