Plant description

Hedychium coronarium, the white Butterfly Ginger, is a herbaceous perennial tropical plant. It is a particularly hardy ginger, and is one of the most fragrant of the Hedychium gingers.  It has a sweet gardenia perfume, especially at night. It is a strong growing plant, and can form a large clump. It takes a wide range of conditions and soils, and has few pests and diseases. It is happiest in tropical to sub tropical areas, but can take low temperatures. It will die back in colder weather, but will reshoot readily in warmer temperatures. It is a good container plant, but can quickly outgrow its pot. It likes a partly shaded postion and regular watering. It will grow in wet areas. It is purely an ornamental plant, and is not the edible ginger.

This plant can be a weedy plant in warmer areas, and has become a major weed in a number of countries, so it should be planted with care. It is a Class 3 pest plant in Queensland.
