Plant description

Veltheimia bracteata is a winter to spring flowering perennial bulb. It has lovely, glossy green, decorative foliage topped with spires of tubular shaped pink flowers. The flowers make great cut flowers. There are different colour forms, from white to creamy yellow, as well. It comes from South Africa, where it grows in shade to semi shade. They like to be kept moist but not wet, and fertilised in the active growing season. They can tolerate light frosts and dry periods. They can be grown as container plants and brought indoors into a brightly lit position, as well as being good garden plants.

Veltheimia has a short dormancy period of a couple of months at the end of summer. The bulb can be left in place during its dormancy without the need for lifting.

Propagation is from offsets, which larger bulbs will make.
